These homes and pavilions draw inspiration from traditional Bidayuh Balazie and Japanese architecture, reinterpreted for contemporary tropical living. Raised above the ground and designed to breathe naturally, they respond to the realities of humid climates while maintaining simplicity, comfort and a strong connection to their surroundings.
The designs are shaped by an understanding that buildings should work with nature rather than against it.
Many modern homes are expensive to build, difficult to maintain and disconnected from the environment around them. These blueprints have been developed to address those challenges through thoughtful, practical design, including:
• Natural ventilation and passive cooling
• Efficient use of space and building materials
• Adaptability for timber and bamboo construction
• Seamless indoor and outdoor living
• Flexible designs that can be built in phases
The result is architecture that feels grounded, functional and connected to place.
Choose the design that best suits your project. Every blueprint package includes the essential drawings and information needed to understand the design and begin planning your build.
Every blueprint package contains:
✓ Architectural drawings: floor plans, elevations and sections
✓ Architectural 3D model of the building
✓ Indicative dimensions provided in both metric and imperial
✓ Guidance for timber and bamboo construction methods
✓ Support for design related questions
The drawings are designed to communicate the core structure, proportions and building intent clearly, while allowing flexibility for personal adaptation.
If you would like modifications, site specific adaptations or a completely bespoke design, please get in touch to discuss your project.
Building in the tropics becomes more achievable with our blueprints. They offer a tested foundation with built in flexibility, reducing early uncertainty and giving you clear direction to move forward with confidence.

These blueprint packages are created for people who want greater confidence and clarity as they begin. They turn uncertainty into preparedness by providing a tested foundation to work from from the start. The platform is ideal for site owners, builders, small scale developers and students seeking to learn from real world design.
They provide a practical and dependable foundation that is already tested and ready to build from. Each blueprint is informed by years of professional architectural practice and direct self build experience. The value lies in reducing risk, bringing clarity to early decisions and replacing uncertainty with a more structured path, so projects can move forward more smoothly and with greater momentum.
The time required will depend on the size and complexity of the project. Some builds may be completed in around 6 months, while others will take longer depending on level of finish.
This depends on your location and local regulations. Our blueprints can be used to support review by local authorities and consultants, and may form part of the approval process.
Yes. The designs in the Chambers Foundation library are based on real building experience and developed for tropical conditions. They have already been built in Asia, including Malaysia and Indonesia, through collaboration with local builders, regional materials and local regulatory frameworks.
Build costs can start from around 20,000 USD for a simple, livable tropical shelter. This would typically include the structural timber frame, roof, mosquito mesh openings and durable basic finishes, with scope to expand over time. Costs will then vary according to project size, level of finish, kitchen and bathroom complexity, local timber prices and whether the build is self managed or labour is hired.
Origins
Chambers Foundation was established by Charlotte Chambers through the lived process of designing and building her own modular timber frame village house in Ulu Bengoh, Borneo. Rooted in both traditional indigenous knowledge and contemporary construction methods, the work explores a more regenerative approach to architecture and daily life. The foundation brings together vernacular wisdom, modular systems and practical hands on construction to create architecture that is accessible, adaptable and connected to its environment. The intention is not only to support build houses, but to cultivate ways of living that are peaceful, resilient and in harmony with the natural world.Global practice to grounded local building
