Book your rainforest stay
We open our doors to people who want to spend longer periods at Ngapuh and become part of the day to day life of the homestead through our collective model.
This is a reduced rate stay, with the option to provide your own food independently or contribute towards communal meals, alongside an expectation that you actively participate in the projects taking place here.
This is not a volunteer exchange or free accommodation in return for labour. It is an opportunity to become part of a small, remote, self reliant community, sharing the work, resources and everyday experience of building something together.
Practise self reliance. Live cooperatively. Build collectively.
Ngapuh is a place of creation, participation and shared responsibility. Our collective has a purpose, a leadership structure and boundaries that everyone is expected to respect.
These principles are the foundation of how we live and work together.
Our doors are open to everyone who respects our community, its leadership and its principles.
Inclusion does not mean an absence of rules or boundaries. Ngapuh is a place of creation, not a place without responsibility. You are welcome to rest, explore and make yourself at home, but you must respect the things that make this place. We will help where we can, but we will not allow individual actions to undermine the place.
You are welcome to bring your own food, supplies, equipment and personal essentials. Take responsibility for your own wellbeing and everyday needs.
Independence is essential to making this collective work. Everyone must be comfortable looking after themselves without placing demands on others.
Give freely. Share your knowledge, skills, time and resources without expecting something in return.
We value generosity, knowledge exchange and the willingness to contribute beyond what is personally gained.
We work together. Everyone contributes to the projects, maintenance and everyday life of the homestead.
The collective is built through shared effort. We take responsibility for the place and the things we create together.
Participation is essential. Everyone is expected to take responsibility for their agreed daily activities and see their commitments through.
Being part of the collective means actively contributing, not simply occupying space.
Respect the community, its leadership, its decisions, its people and the surrounding environment.
Ngapuh has an established leadership structure. Collective decisions and agreed principles take precedence over individual preferences. You are free to disagree, but participation means respecting the framework within which the community operates. If this does not suit you, you are free to leave.
Respect the forest, minimise waste and leave your space and the land better than you found it.
We are guests of the surrounding landscape and have a responsibility to protect the natural environment and the resources we depend upon.
We embrace a practical hybrid approach to living, combining traditional knowledge, appropriate technology and modern conveniences where they serve the community.
We are interested in finding practical ways to live well with fewer resources, while embracinembracing useful technology or knowledge.
Bring your individuality, creativity and ideas, while respecting the shared values and boundaries of the community.
We encourage freedom of expression while maintaining consideration for others. Dress appropriately in shared spaces and in the presence of others.
Projects developed through the collective are undertaken for and with Ngapuh Homestead. They are not individual commercial or branding opportunities.
Activities and their outcomes are documented under the Ngapuh identity. Participants are welcome to share their involvement and celebrate what has been achieved collectively, but no individual should present shared projects, resources or work as their own independent venture.
Participation at Ngapuh operates through an agreed arrangement between the participant and the community.
Accommodation
Accommodation is arranged through our booking platform at a discounted community rate. Rates are based on a weekly arrangement, with participants able to agree their intended length of stay in advance.
Camping is also possible for those bringing their own equipment.
Food and personal supplies
Food and personal essentials are the responsibility of each participant. You can bring and prepare your own food independently or contribute towards communal meals at an agreed cost.
Daily contribution
In return for access to the discounted accommodation arrangement, participants commit to agreed daily activities and contribute to the ongoing work, projects and maintenance of the homestead.
Activities and expectations are agreed before participation begins.
Duration and continuation
Participation is agreed on a weekly basis. Continuing beyond the agreed period is subject to mutual agreement and the participant fulfilling their commitments.
The community leadership reserves the right to end participation where agreed contributions are not being met or where someone is acting against the principles.
Ngapuh is a place of natural resources, traditional knowledge and possibilities. Set within the rainforest landscape of the Bengoh Range in Sarawak, we are exploring ways of living, building and creating in closer relationship with the surrounding environment.
There is an opportunity to bring together people with different skills, ideas and interests to work collectively on projects that contribute something.
From bamboo architecture and natural building to farming.
We are looking to connect with people who want to be part of making things happen.
Life at Ngapuh requires independence. We are remote, with access through the rainforest and limited infrastructure. This is part of what makes the place special, but it also means that everyone needs to take responsibility for themselves.
We are inspired by radical self reliance, communal effort and participation. Rather than arriving as guests expecting to be looked after, we want to bring together people who are comfortable contributing, sharing knowledge and taking initiative.
The intention is simple, to create more together than we could individually.
Bamboo architecture. Exploring bamboo as a beautiful, practical and renewable building material. Developing structures, building techniques, furniture and experimental architectural projects using the abundant bamboo resources around us.
Natural building and infrastructure. Creating useful structures and facilities that support life at the homestead, using locally available materials and appropriate construction methods.
Farming and food systems. Working with the surrounding landscape, growing food, exploring traditional Bidayuh knowledge and developing more resilient ways of producing and sharing resources.
The collective is not a retreat or volunteer placement. We are interested in creating opportunities for people to come together around specific projects, contribute their skills and participate in a shared experience of making.
Participants are expected to be self sufficient and independently organised.
This means taking responsibility for food, supplies, accommodation and everyday needs. We can share knowledge about the location, available resources and practical arrangements, but we are not providing a hosted experience or full catering service.
Who we are looking for
Architects, designers, builders, farmer and chefs.
People interested in bamboo, natural materials, appropriate technology, ecological living and community led development.
Practical skills and experience are essential.
Above all, we are interested in people who enjoy taking responsibility, working collaboratively and being part of something while it is taking shape.
