We’re excited to welcome an earth building specialist for an upcoming hands on workshop exploring natural earth wall techniques alongside our work with bamboo.

Together, we’ll explore how earth and bamboo can be combined to create natural wall systems, bringing together specialist knowledge of earth construction with local bamboo building knowledge and experience.

Workshop Itinerary

PRIOR: Meet Up in Kuching

Welcome gathering in Kuching town for an afternoon meet up. A chance to group and get to know each other before the journey begins.

DAY 01: Arrive at Ngapuh Homestead

Travel into the rainforest and settle into the homestead. Meet the team and other participants, share a meal together and be introduced to the workshop, the site and the project ahead.

DAY 02: Earth, Soil & Materials

An introduction to earth building and the materials available locally. We’ll explore the characteristics of the soil, carry out basic soil testing and begin preparing the earth mixes for the wall system.

DAY 03: Earth Wall Systems

Working with the earth wall system, learning how earth can be integrated with bamboo and timber structures. The day combines practical demonstrations with hands on construction.

DAY 04: Building with Earth & Bamboo

Continue construction and develop the wall system through hands on building. We’ll explore the relationship between the bamboo structure, earth infill and the different layers that make up a natural wall.

DAY 05: Earth Plasters & Natural Finishes

Move into the finishing stages, exploring natural earth plasters, mixes, application techniques and surface finishes. Time to refine the details and understand how the materials behave in practice.

DAY 06: Complete & Reflect

Bring the work together and complete the wall system. We’ll review what we have built, reflect on the techniques explored and consider how these approaches can be adapted to other climates, buildings and projects.

DAY 07: Waterfall & Farewell

After five focused days of building, we’ll slow down and enjoy the landscape. A visit to the waterfall offers time to experience the rainforest and the place that has shaped the workshop before returning to begin the journey home.
